Nov. 17 - Band

Hello everyone,

We are now preparing for our Dec. 11 concert and our Grade 5s are BUSY! They'll be playing Jolly Old St. Nicholas and Popcorn Prelude for the concert. In addition, they have three songs to learn to sing for the Christmas play. The songs are pretty simple, but there's lots to do.

I've handed out the words to the song "The King of Rock and Roll" and would like to encourage the students to begin learning the words and the actions. The words to the other songs will be distributed on Wednesday, November 19.

As for band, the students are working on their 6-note scale. Today we practised in half-notes and on Wednesday we will try it with quarter notes. By next week, we will try it on different rhythms so the students need to be comfortable with those notes. We've also been learning about harmony and duets. "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" is written in two parts so the students are asked to learn both the "A" line and the "B" line. On Wednesday, we'll be learning about 2/4 time and key signatures.

I'll do my best to keep everyone updated after each class. Thanks everyone!

Monday

Language Arts - Camp Readwell challenge - After the first month the student were very excited about the idea of getting free meal for reading. A few of them met their goal and that was great but I think instead of having to complete two books for this challenge I would make it a time commitment. So here's the plan if students read 20 minutes per night during the week they would read 100 minutes each week. Now it has to be sustained reading not watching aTV and reading at the same time. The goal would be then to have each student read for 400 minutes in the last five weeks before Christmas. If the students reach their goal we could plan a class meal at Montana's restaurant some time in January where the kids could cash in their cards and get their free meal. Each student has a sheet that parents must initial to confirm that they have read for the time indicated.

Science - Please make sure you have completed the electrical devices at home sheet and classified them according to the chart.

TERRY FOX SCHOOL DAY RUN GOES THIS FRIDAY!!

Parents please read the following:

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Starting Monday I am implementing a plan in my classroom to help the students build community.

It is based on a model of mutual respect, communication, and effective problem solving. As students interact with each other during the week they often do many kind things and sometimes may do things that are unkind. The way this will work is that once weekly, (Friday’s religion class) students will have the opportunity to formally compliment their classmates for something they have done during the week. If an issue or dispute arises during the week that a student wants the class to address (e.g. a playground issue or teasing) the student will have the opportunity to explain how the incident made them feel and ask the other person to stop. If a student wants the class to address a dispute they will first have to wait at least 30 minutes and then write their concern in a meeting book that will be kept on my desk.
If the problem continues I will then intervene. Of course anything serious will be dealt with promptly either by administration or me.

Friday's Band Clinic

Hello everyone!

I'd just like to thank all of the students for attending our headstart clinic this past Friday. Not only were they polite and respectful but they worked very hard too. As many of you witnessed, the clinic was well worth the time as our students came away excited and ready to play.

As of today, the students will be assigned songs from the book to practice. For the first few weeks, I will be looking to make sure that they are able to properly assemble their instruments, read and perform whole notes, half notes and quarter notes on the first 5 notes they learn.

Also beginning today, the students will be asked to use their "practice picks". If they've practiced, they are asked to move their guitar pick to center of their picture that's on the wall. If they need some extra help, they move it to a different part of the wall.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Homework for parents:

I 'm asking that parents do a bit of homework for next Monday. Most parents like to show how proud they are of their kids and this is your opportunity to boast about your kid.

What I'm asking of each of you is to please write me a letter, email, essay, short novel about your son or daughter. I'm hoping that you'll be able to give me some insight into their special interests and talents. It would be nice to have these before Wednesday's bar b que if possible. It would really help me communication wise if I have emails for each of you so if you want to email the assignment that would be great.

Oh Yeah !The students have a Social studies assignement on page 5 for Monday and their Health cover page is due on Tuesday.

See you all on Wednesday night.
